Agave against diabetes and overweight

Agave sugar  can help with weight loss and the fight against diabetes, according to a recent Mexican study. The agave is a cactus-like plant that grows in Mexico and was used by the Mayans and Aztecs.

It is the origin of the famous national drink, tequila. Note that in this drink, the sugar that has the medicinal effect is transformed into alcohol, so it is useless to drink tequila to lose weight or fight diabetes.

Agavinos are the natural sugars of the agave with long chains of fructose from the fructan family. These sugars are not absorbed by the body, so they cannot raise blood sugar.

These substances act as sweeteners and limit the absorption of sugar in the blood (glycemia), as stated by Mexican researchers from the Center for Research and Advanced Studies, Biotechnology and Biochemistry Irapuato de Guanajuato, Mexico.

The study was carried out on rats. Researchers observed that glucose levels decreased and that they lost weight after consuming these sugars.

Agavinos also increase the level of the peptide GLP-1 (glucagon like peptide-1), which promotes insulin production and therefore helps to stabilize blood sugar levels. Agavinos belong to the family of dietary fibers and also contribute to reducing appetite.

Agave could one day be used as a sweetener for people who are overweight and have  type 2 diabetes . Agave also has the advantage of having a low glycemic index.

A negative aspect, however, is the fact that agavins are not as important sugars as sucrose, fructose or glucose.
