Back Pain: Don’t Suffer From It

Back pain is one of the most recurring problems in the medical clinic. The data are staggering: according to the World Health Organization, 80% of the world’s population will suffer from back pain at some point in their lives.  

This type of occurrence is so common that most people end up not going to the doctor when they feel any back pain. In fact, most cases of back pain resolve spontaneously or with the adoption of some corrective measures, such as changing posture and sleeping habits. In other cases, however, back pain becomes persistent and chronic and even interferes with people’s daily activities.

What causes back pain?

There are several causes of orthopedic problems. Many of them are associated with postural problems arising from bad habits adopted in everyday life. Sitting for a long time or standing for long periods, wearing uncomfortable shoes or playing sports without equipment and proper guidance are some of the causes of back pain.

Some of the postural problems are also caused by defects in the spine. Conditions such as  hernia , lordosis, kyphosis,  osteoarthritis  and  osteoporosis  result in frequent back pain.

Associated with this, the sedentary lifestyle also results in spinal problems. Obesity, lack of physical exercises to strengthen muscles, sedentary lifestyle and use of chemical substances such as cigarettes and drugs, trigger lumbar and cervical pain.

Finally, most back pain is associated with psychological problems such as  stress , nervousness, anxiety  and  depression .

How to deal with back pain?

The first thing to do is identify the cause of back pain. As discussed, most cases are due to postural problems caused by bad daily habits. If this is the case for you, take corrective measures. Some tips are:

– If your work requires you to sit for long periods, take regular breaks to walk and move around. Doing frequent stretches also helps to relax the muscles. If you have to stand for a long time, sit for a few minutes and stretch your back.

– If you have spine or bone problems, such as kyphosis and osteoporosis, seek treatment for these conditions.

– If you have a sedentary lifestyle, try to correct that. Do physical exercises with guidance, have a healthy diet and avoid the use of drugs and cigarettes. Controlling stress, nervousness and treating depression also help in managing back pain.

What treatments are available?

There are a variety of treatments available for back pain, from traditional measures such as anti-inflammatories to alternative treatments such as acupuncture and yoga.

The treatment will be prescribed by the doctor according to the severity and duration of the case. It is important to emphasize that diseases such as osteoporosis and arthritis will also be treated.

Physical therapy is usually employed to teach patients what posture to adopt throughout the day, as well as the correct stretches to adopt. Physical activities such as bodybuilding, walking and swimming have been constantly prescribed to prevent back pain and strengthen the muscles involved.

Finally, it’s important to always pay attention to how your spine is doing. If back pain is persistent and does not improve with correction of posture problems, look for an orthopedist.
