Cabbage leaf (cabbage poultice)


Against rheumatic pains (inflammation). For example, in cases of painful joints such as osteoarthritis of the knee.


– Cabbage leaves (curly kale preferably)


– Place the cabbage leaves on a thin cloth

– Place the thin cloth with the cabbages in the cold oven and set to 200°C. Leave the preparation in the oven for 5 minutes

– Remove the thick edges

Note on preparation

– If you want, you can also apply cold cabbage leaves as a compress or with a bandage over the painful joint.


– Apply to painful areas (inflamed knee, wrist,…) one or two strips of cabbage leaves previously crushed with a rolling pin (to remove the cabbage juice)

– Leave it on the affected area for several hours and fix it with a bandage, avoid squeezing it too much. If possible leave it overnight.


A study carried out at the University of Duisburg-Essen in Germany showed that the application of cabbage leaves on the knees of patients with arthrosis was more effective than standard treatment, but was not more effective than diclofenac gel (10 mg of diclofenac/g used at least once a day). In their conclusions, as poultice is more effective than the usual treatment, the German researchers recommend using this natural treatment. This study was carried out on 81 patients and published in 2016 in the specialized journal The Clinical Journal of Pain .
