7 foods that fight prostate cancer

The month of November is known as “blue November”, with health campaigns aimed at the male audience, as well as “pink October”, aimed at women. Among the various diseases that affect men, prostate cancer is one of the most serious and life-threatening diseases. Although the precise factors that lead to the disease are not fully known, it is known that diet plays an important role in promoting or preventing cancer. Here, we bring you a list of foods and eating habits that can help prevent prostate cancer and make you live better. But do not forget, even with a balanced diet, regularly see your doctor for diagnostic tests.

  1. Carrot. In addition to being rich in fiber, carrots have vitamin A precursors that are powerful antioxidants. Also, carrots are rich in the compound called falcarinol. Studies show that this substance helps prevent different types of cancer.
  2. Tomatoes. This food is rich in lycopene component, a powerful antioxidant. In a review of 21 scientific studies, researchers found that men who eat raw or cooked tomatoes are less likely to develop prostate cancer than men who don’t eat tomatoes often.
  3. Broccoli. A Canadian study showed that men who eat broccoli and cauliflower are less likely to develop the aggressive form of prostate cancer. Researchers think that a compound called sulfurophane is responsible for killing malignant cells while preserving healthy cells.
  4. Pomegranate. This fruit, particularly pomegranate juice , has been shown to be effective in preventing prostate cancer. Studies indicate that pomegranate helps reduce the increase in PSA (prostate specific antigen) and also reduces the recurrence of the onset of the disease after the first treatment. Researchers imagine that compounds called ellagitannins are responsible for the beneficial power.
  5. Legumes. Foods such as soybeans , beans, peanuts and lentils are rich in phytoestrogens such as isoflavones. These compounds help fight malignant cancer cells. Two scientific review papers found a 30% reduction in the risk of developing prostate cancer in men who consumed soy. In addition, there was a 12% reduction in PSA levels compared to patients who ate wheat.
  6. Green tea. Studies in the Asian population, where green tea is widely consumed, show that there is a lower incidence of prostate cancer in the male population. Researchers believe that the high content of antioxidants and polyphenols helps fight the onset of the disease.
  7. Salmon. Salmon is rich in omega-3s that help the body fight inflammation and maintain a healthy immune system. Other important sources of omega-3 are sardines, tuna and grains.

In addition to these foods, there are some important tips that can help reduce the risk of developing the disease. Avoid consuming too much:

– Red meat.

– Refined sugar and soft drinks.

– Alcohol.

– Fast food and foods high in fat, especially trans fats.

– Processed and canned foods.

– Sausages, such as sausage, salami, sausage, etc…

– Dairy products. Men should not consume too many dairy products. A European study of more than 10,000 men showed that consuming 35 grams of dairy products a day, equivalent to a glass of milk, increased the risk of developing prostate cancer by 32% compared to those who consumed less dairy products. Men who drank two glasses of milk a day had their risk of prostate cancer increased by 60%.

Note that calcium supplements also increase the risk of cancer. Men who consumed 400 mg of calcium a day or more saw their risk of prostate cancer increase by 51%.

Ingesting 200 micrograms of selenium per day in the diet or in the form of supplements has a significant effect on the prevention of prostate cancer, some studies refer to a risk reduction of 63%.

Excessive intake of vitamin E increases the risk of developing prostate cancer by 68%.
