India: vinegar to detect cervical cancer

A simple and inexpensive technique ofdetecting cervical cancerwith vinegar can save thousands of lives of women in poor countries, according to a large clinical trial in India. The results were presented Sunday (08/06) in the United States.

This study was conducted over 15 years with 150,000 Indian women between 35 and 64 years of age, indicating a 31% reduction in mortality from cervical cancer due to this examination, the researchers said in a presentation at the annual conference of the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO).

They believe this simple test can save 22,000 lives a year in India and 73,000 lives in other low-income countries. In these countries, there is little or no access to the Pap smear, the usual procedure for detecting this type of cancer throughout the industrialized world.

The method of visual detection of uterine cancer test in India is available to everyone using vinegar, gauze and a halogen lamp. It requires minimal training from qualified nurses or medical workers.

“We hope that the results of this study will have a significant impact on reducing the incidence of cervical cancer in India and worldwide,” says Dr. Surendra Srinivas Shastri, professor of preventive oncology at Tata Memorial Hospital in Bombay, lead author of the study.

“We are already working with state and national health authorities in India to make this screening and medical education technique accessible to all women in the country,” the oncologist said.

Preventable uterine cancer

The 150,000 women recruited for this study had no history of uterine cancer. Half underwent biennial tests with vinegar and the other half no test, which is normal in India.

The incidence of uterine cancer was similar in both groups, 26.5 per 100,000 among those being selected and 26.7 per 100,000 among others. But the test allowed a 31% reduction in the mortality rate.

Cervical cancer is preventable. It is responsible for 275,000 deaths per year worldwide, 80% are recorded in developing countries.
