nausea and vomiting

Definition

Nausea is a feeling of being unwell followed by the urge to vomit. This state is the result of contractions in the stomach region, which does not digest food, but returns it into the esophagus for a final ejection (vomiting).
In most cases, vomiting allows the body to eject toxic or unpleasant substances, to find a sense of relief (disappearance of nausea). Vomiting is a natural phenomenon that can even save our lives.

Causes

Nausea and vomiting can have many causes, such as:

– food poisoning (ingestion of rotten food)

– a flu

– the use of certain drugs (mainly drugs used in chemotherapy, in the treatment of cancer)

– a gastroenteritis

– alcohol abuse

– seasickness, on a plane….motion sickness (transport in general)

– pregnancy (morning sickness)

– the meningitis

– a very strong headache

– strong and unpleasant smells

– mental disorders (bulimia, anorexia)

– overeating

– intense stress

– gallstones.

– a general anaesthesia.

Symptoms

The symptoms of nausea are quite characteristic and recognizable. In addition to vomiting and vertigo, which are the most obvious, the following may also occur:

– perspiration, sweats, chills, excessive salivation

– a feeling of general weakness and fatigue

– loss of appetite

Note that nausea often leads to vomiting, but not always.

Attention, in case of vomiting there is always a risk of dehydration, especially among the most vulnerable people (children, elderly people).

duration of symptoms

In cases of viral origin, nausea and vomiting usually last from several hours to 2-3 days.

Treatments

As nausea and vomiting are in most cases natural reactions, it is not always necessary to take medication.

The first step that must be taken is to try to calm down (in the case of seasickness or stress, for example), to stabilize the psychic state.

If nausea is caused by food poisoning or alcohol abuse, then in no case should you prevent vomiting, as the body must get rid of harmful substances.

However, sometimes medication may be necessary. There are several anti-nausea and vomiting medications that can be bought over the counter without a prescription, such as:

– based on domperidona

– based on meclozine, caffeine and vitamin B6

Herbal medicine

It is possible to relieve nausea through natural herbal remedies, such as ginger ( in infusion or pills). This plant favors digestion, has a relaxing effect and tones the muscles of the digestive system. If you suffer from transport sickness, you can drink a ginger infusion 3 or 4 hours before your trip.

Another effective plant is mint. It decreases contractions in the stomach region and is strongly advised in pregnancy. Chamomile favors the ejection of food and purifies the stomach and liver.

In summary, all these plants have a positive effect against nausea and vomiting.

– ginger (for example, in the form of an infusion)

– mint (for example, in the form of an infusion or essential oil)

– the cannabis . In fact, the THC used in Canada and the USA is recommended in the form of a ready-to-use medicine, which can be purchased with a medical prescription, in case of vomiting caused by chemotherapy.

– chamomile (usually in the form of an infusion)

Homeopathy

To treat nausea and vomiting through homeopathy, Nux vomica (plant rich in alkaloids) is indicated.

In case of nausea and vomiting, you can take 3 granules of Nux Vomica 5CH at a time, several times a day. These can also be used during pregnancy.

For more information (and for more personalized remedies, depending on the symptoms), look for a homeopath.

Tips

– Although nausea and vomiting are natural reactions, they can have complications.

It is therefore necessary to consult a doctor in case of the presence of blood or small black grains in the vomit. If the malaise is accompanied by a high fever or if it occurs after the use of certain medications, it is also necessary to consult a doctor.

In all cases, when discomforts occur during an advanced pregnancy, look for a specialist, as we do not know what effects they may have on the fetus.

– In infants, the elderly or people with a confused state, in case of ejection, the vomitus can enter the lungs and cause asphyxiation. That’s why it’s very important to throw up leaning forward and not lying down.

– After vomiting it is better not to eat anything for about 2 hours to allow the stomach to “regenerate”, during this period also drink as little as possible. However, after 2 hours, drink plenty of fluids, because vomiting can be very dehydrating. It is advisable to drink it in regular small portions, avoid drinks with caffeine, milk or alcohol.

– To alleviate nausea and achieve physical balance, it is advisable to stretch for a short time and take deep breaths.

– For a few days after the onset of nausea and vomiting, avoid alcohol, tobacco, and fatty or spicy foods.
