Telemedicine centers reinforce telehealth

The Telemedicine University Network (RUTE) gains five more centers in the country, three in Pernambuco, one in Bahia and one more in São Paulo – the network now has 68 centers in total. The simultaneous inauguration of the five environments was attended by the secretary of Work Management and Health Education of the Ministry of Health, Mozart Sales, this Friday, in Pernambuco. The expansion of the network will reinforce the Telessaúde Brasil Redes Program, coordinated by the Ministry of Health, which uses technology to promote teleassistance, teleconsultation and teleeducation in the Unified Health System. Telehealth helps to improve care and qualify the diagnosis, since the doctor at a health unit in the interior of the state can answer questions or get a “second opinion” from specialists.

“The Ministry of Health fully understands the importance of a network with these characteristics for Brazil, because we understand the continental dimensions of the country, its diversity and aspects related to installed capacity and the availability of human resources. With this new network, it will be possible to integrate in real time with good transmission speed and quality to carry out videoconferences, diagnostic analyzes and continuing education”, recalled the Secretary.

The new centers were installed at the Emergency Cardiological University of Pernambuco Prof. Luiz Tavares (PROCAPE), at the Oswaldo Cruz University Hospital (HUOC) and at the Institute of Integral Medicine Prof. Fernando Figueira (IMIP), in Recife (PE), at the Roberto Santos General Hospital, in Salvador (BA) and at the Hospital das Clínicas of the Paulista State University Júlio de Mesquita Filho (UNESP), in Botucatu (SP).

RUTE –  With the new centers, the Telemedicine University Network will now have 68 centers inaugurated and in full operation throughout Brazil. The initiative, which is coordinated by the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation, with the support of the Ministries of Health, Education and Culture, is considered the largest in the world in the integration of University and Teaching Hospitals. It is responsible for holding 600 video and web conference sessions per year and an average of two to three daily scientific sessions with the participation of 300 institutions in Latin America, and is also a fundamental tool for the establishment of telemedicine centers.

TELESSAÚDE BRASIL REDES –  The Telessaúde Brasil Redes program interconnects, through information technology, Primary Care health units with centers of specialists and technicians who exchange information to improve care in the SUS and qualify diagnosis and treatment at the primary care level . The program is in operation in 12 states and since 2005 it has carried out around 50,000 teleconsultations, 665,572 telediagnoses (analysis of distance support tests), and 643 “training second opinions”. This year, the program received a contribution of R$ 70 million, and will be present, by the end of 2013, in 3,256 municipalities in all federative units.
