Acne is a recurring problem in teenagers and some adults. Although the appearance of acne is not normally associated with any serious pathological condition, its presence can cause embarrassment and psychological problems in some people. A recent study carried out by the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA) in the United States associated vitamin B12 with the appearance of acne and its proliferation.
The study in detail
The study was published in the June 24, 2015 issue of the scientific journal Science Translational Medicine, coordinated by dermatologist Dr. Noah Craft.
According to the results of the study, vitamin B12 causes the bacteria normally found on the skin to start producing chemical agents that cause acne breakouts. The bacteria in question, found both in people with and without acne, is Propionibacterium acnes . The difference is that in people with acne , this bacteria has a different metabolism. The researchers found 109 genes that are more active in the bacteria of people with acne and 27 less active genes.
The researchers gave vitamin B12 supplements to 10 acne-free subjects, and one of them developed acne 1 week later. This study provides a possible explanation for a fact that scientists already knew but didn’t understand why, that vitamin B12 causes acne.
About the problem of acne
Acne is a common teenage problem and is caused by inflammation of the pilosebaceous follicles, usually associated with bacteria. Although more common in teenagers, the condition can persist into adulthood and appears to be more common in males than females.
Its pathophysiology is complex and involves several factors, such as age, diet, genetic factors, variations in hormonal rates, emotional state and environmental factors. Some genetic diseases also facilitate the appearance of acne. It is most common in areas of high oiliness, such as the T-zone of the face and back.
Many treatments are based on cleaning and exfoliating the skin with agents such as salicylic acid, glycolic acid and vitamin A derivatives. In some cases, the use of topical and oral antibiotics is necessary to combat the proliferation of bacteria.
A vitamina B12
Vitamin B12, also known as cyanocobalamin, is an important cofactor for several functions in the body. Its consumption is necessary for the metabolism of nucleic acids of blood cells, prevention of heart problems and stroke, maintenance of the nervous system and prevention of megaloblastic anemia.
Vitamin B12 deficiency has been linked to memory problems and poor concentration, fatigue and muscle problems, circulatory and central nervous system problems (such as hallucinations and paranoia), and blood problems. The main sources of vitamin B12 include liver, tuna, salmon, meat, milk and eggs.
Although its consumption is fundamental for humans, the study carried out by UCLA showed that its excess favors the appearance of acne. The use without nutritional or medical recommendation of dietary supplements rich in vitamin B12 can lead to undesirable side effects. In addition, its excess can lead to changes in lymphocytes and spleen. Therefore, the best thing to do is to check whether vitamin B12 supplementation is really necessary.
